The Street Team That Builds Compassion Through Pigeon First Aid

September 9, 2026

The Tenderloin Voice

In a sun-drenched patch of grass at Union Square, a flock of pigeons gathers around Carla Cabral. She is half-crouched and her gaze is fixed on a spot right in front of her toes. I only realize she’s made a move when the flock explodes into flight — she has darted out her arms, moving faster than I thought humanly possible, and when she straightens, she’s holding a bird. Her grip appears gentle, but secure.

Sonoma Loves Its Farms. Activists Call Them Factories. Could a Ballot Measure Upend This County?

In dimly lit indoor aisles at Weber Family Farms in Petaluma, hundreds of thousands of white chickens live out their 90 weeks of life. They fly from perch to perch. They dust bathe in the bedding.
