We've all had someone tell us that they only buy "humane meat," and it can be hard to know how to respond. Here are three simple tips that you can use in these conversations to dispel the humane myth:

1. Elevate the values you share. Someone who tries to buy "humane meat" already cares about animals and thinks they are doing something good. Let them know that while their compassion is a great thing, it is being misled by a manipulative system. Show them that you are both on the same side against a violent system.

2. Ask them to define "humane meat." It is important to understand their perspective so you can meet them where they are at, and address more specifically the conditions they believe in.

3. Show them Lenny's story so they can see that even at a "humane" family farm, animals like Lenny are deprived of their basic rights, including the right to medical care when they are sick.

With these tips and an attitude of love and patience, you can help your friends and family realize that animal agriculture goes against their own values.
