DxE filmed Grimmius’s operations using drone cameras, documenting many of the grim realities ubiquitous in the mass production of animals for food: calves being handled roughly, hit, and pushed to the ground. But perhaps most remarkably, the footage offers a rare view of what is arguably the most overlooked form of extreme confinement of farmed animals in the US.

The grocery chain Good Earth Natural Foods shared in a March 5 email and in signage placed around its stores it has decided to stop carrying Rosie’s Chicken in its stores. Rosie’s is produced by Petaluma Poultry, a subsidiary of Perdue Farms. The decision, according to the posted notices, was because “We have concerns around their animal handling practices and the lack of transparency into their operations.”

An animal rights group said Sunday that its members disrupted a wellness event at the Erewhon grocery store on South Lake Avenue with a satirical skit alleging the upscale grocer sells products from suppliers the group says engage in animal cruelty. Members of Direct Action Everywhere dressed in hazmat suits and acted out a mock “necropsy” of a stuffed goat inside the store.

Free speech experts say that Perdue’s lawsuit is a Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation, or SLAPP suit, intended to silence activists, burden them with legal fees, and intimidate them from protesting. California's anti-SLAPP statute was passed to enable defendants to quickly dismiss meritless lawsuits targeting protected activities.
